Cosmic Ray Transport Workshop
"Cosmic-Ray Transport Across Scales: From In Situ Heliospheric Measurements to Galactic Systems"
Dates: May 18–19, 2026
Location: The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH
Scientific Background:
Cosmic rays (CRs) play a central role in the dynamics of astrophysical plasmas, spanning from the heliosphere to galactic and extragalactic scales. Across these environments, common microphysical processes—including wave-particle scattering, CR-driven instabilities, and shock acceleration—govern how CRs propagate and couple to the surrounding plasma. Despite this shared physics foundation, CR research has largely developed in parallel across communities, limiting opportunities for cross-disciplinary exchange.
Workshop Goals:
This workshop will bring together researchers studying CRs across a wide range of scales—from the heliosphere and interstellar medium to galaxies and galaxy clusters—to develop a common framework for CR physics. By placing heliospheric and galactic/extragalactic perspectives in direct dialogue, the meeting will enable side-by-side comparison of CR transport formalisms and the diagnostics used to constrain them. The workshop will combine presentations with topic-focused discussion sessions to encourage active exchange.
The workshop will be organized around the following themes:
Leveraging in situ heliospheric measurements (e.g., Parker Solar Probe, Solar Orbiter, Voyager) to constrain CR transport physics in regimes inaccessible to remote astrophysical observations.
Understanding and constraining CR transport on the galaxy scale theoretically and observationally in accordance with smaller-scale CR physics.
