Ohio State Roman telescope team celebrates front row for historic mission

Faculty, students, and staff from The Ohio State University celebrated the successful launch of NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope—a mission aimed at uncovering the secrets of dark matter, dark energy, and distant worlds. Marking over a decade of OSU research contributions toward the telescope's technologies and survey programs, more than 20 Buckeyes traveled to Florida to watch the launch in person while others joined virtually from campus. Viewing from near NASA’s historic Vehicle Assembly Building, OSU Distinguished University Professor David Weinberg noted the excitement of seeing 15 years of collaborative effort come together for liftoff.

Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the observatory utilizes a high-powered wide-field infrared camera to survey the universe a thousand times faster than Hubble. Ohio State researchers plan to leverage these capabilities to map cosmic structures at an unprecedented scale and observe long-term stellar phenomena. The CCAPP Postdoctoral fellow, Claire Lamman, highlighted how Roman's crisp imaging will reveal how galaxies connect to their cosmic environments, while an Astronomy graduate student, Paarmita Pandey, explained that the telescope’s repeat surveys are perfectly designed to catch "failed supernovae"—massive stars that collapse directly into black holes without exploding.
