Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

On December 4, CCAPP will host Dr. Jillian Scudder, an Associate Professor of Physics & Astronomy at Oberlin College, for a special talk.

Title: From science to story and back again

There are many stages to learning something new about the universe, but the final stage is always communication. In order to publish in a peer-reviewed journal, there are a very specific set of guidelines - from the layout of the page, to the way that we display results, to the type of language that is desired, right down to the spelling. Departing from that format means learning new genres of writing, and my favorites have been in learning to tell stories from scientific results. I will talk about my path to writing for a general audience, and the way I approach storytelling for a technical subject.

Dr. Scudder's active field of research is understanding the limitations of gas-phase metallicities in nearby galaxies, primarily focusing on the SDSS MaNGA survey.

We are looking forward to seeing you there.
