Title: The Galactic Neutrino Puzzle
Abstract: The search for the origins of cosmic rays as well as the signatures of new physics, are closely tied to precision measurements, of both point and diffuse sources of very-high-energy Galactic and extra-galactic emission. In 2023, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory reported the detection of TeV neutrinos from the plane of the Milky Way. The origin of this flux remains uncertain. Whether it arises entirely from cosmic-ray propagation in the interstellar medium, or includes unresolved sources is an open question. At the same time, TeV gamma-ray surveys, such as HAWC and LHAASO, have identified numerous sources of ultra-high-energy photons extending to PeV energies. These sources have emerged as strong candidate cosmic-ray accelerators and potential neutrino emitters. In this presentation, I will describe multi-messenger observations of some regions in the Galactic plane to elucidate the intricate connection between neutrino and gamma-ray astronomy at the highest energies. I will also provide an overview and current status of the next-generation kilometer-scale neutrino observatory, the Pacific Ocean Neutrino Experiment (P-ONE), and its scientific potential in the pursuit of high-energy neutrino sources.
