All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae: Big Science with Small TelescopesProfessor Kris StanekThursday, February 13, 20208:00-9:00 pm, Koffolt Laboratory (a.k.a. "CBEC") Room 130
The All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae surveys the entire visible sky every night, the first such record in human history. The founders of ASAS-SN, OSU astronomers Kris Stanek and Chris Kochanek, were awarded the2020 Beatrice M. Tinsley Prize of the American Astronomical Society,"For their innovative contributions to time-domain astronomy and, in particular, their leadership in the All-Sky Automated Survey forSupernovae (ASAS-SN)."
Professor Stanek will tell the story of ASAS-SN and its discoveries about supernovae, tidal disruption of stars by black holes, and many other phenomena of the variable night sky.
