CCAPP Special Seminar - Markus Boettcher (North-West University, Potchefstoom, South Africa)
Speaker: Prof. Markus Boettcher (North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa)
Neutrino Emission from Blazars
There is growing evidence that blazars - a class of jet-dominated active galactic nuclei with their jets pointing close to our line of sight - are the sources of part of the very-high-energy (VHE) neutrino flux detected by IceCube. This talk will provide an introduction to the physics of blazars and the hadronic processes which result in the production of VHE neutrinos. Specific results for several recently found coincidences between flaring blazars and IceCube neutrino alerts will be discussed. Recent results obtained by a study of the expected beaming patterns of neutrino emission from blazars will be presented.
